The "Namiki Limited Edition Yukari Bumblebee Fountain Pen"
Behind these masterpieces are the "Kokkokai", a group of Maki-e Artisans formed in 1931. Pursuing the traditional crafts, these talented individuals bring elements of Japanese traditional culture to life through Namiki's Intricate writing instruments.
With only 300 pieces worldwide, these exclusive limited edition fountain pens were inspired by the harmonious relationship between flora and fauna in the natural world, capturing the essence of mutualism through delicate motifs of Bumblebee and Blue Salvia flowers.
Bumblebees are often regarded as symbols of intelligence and individual strength.
Recognised as indispensable pollinators for numerous plants and flowers, the Bumblebee serves as the central motif of this exquisite masterpiece.
Complementing the bumblebee motif are the vibrant Blue Salvias. A native North American and Mexican flower, symbolising respect, wisdom and familial love.
Crafted with meticulous attention to detail.
The technique of Hira Maki-e (Flat Maki-e) has been employed to capture pollen adorning the wings and the body. Portraying the Bumblebee earnestly collecting nectar, bringing the vivid scene to life.
As for the imagery of Bumblebees flitting and fluttering around the Blue Salvias, a masterful blend of techniques were used. Utilising the combination of Togidashi Maki-e (Burnished Maki-e), Raden (Mother-of-Pearl) and gold powder, the enthralling end result conveys movement and light in the pen’s design.
Employing the Togidashi Maki-e technique, the primary design is first created using Hira Maki-e techniques, followed by a detailed application of Urushi lacquer. Once dry, the final design emerges as artisans deftly burnish the lacquer with charcoal, revealing a mesmerising interplay of light and motion.
Encased in an exquisite box adorned with Hakone marquetry that is reminiscent of the intricate patterns of honeycombs, each pen is a true testament to the beauty and resilience of nature.
